Established in 1963, Messum’s Fine Art has strived to bring art and sculpture to our clients in an exciting and diverse manner, readily adapting and diversifying to meet their changing needs. The situation which we have all experienced during 2020 is, perhaps the most challenging yet, and here at the Studio we are sensitive to the changing environment in which we find ourselves and the reality that not all of our customers are comfortable visiting Messum’s St. James’s gallery in Bury Street, London.

We are delighted to announce a new concept conceived and managed at Messum’s Studio in the Marlow countryside. Each month, Messum’s Studio Selections draws together a diverse group of works selected from our extensive collections of 19th and 20th century and contemporary art and the Artist Estates which we represent.
The list of paintings and sculpture, some never previously exhibited, will be available to view and buy on our website for one month only and will be exhibited in the Studio during that month. We are aiming to make the process as simple as possible for our collectors and with extensive imagery of each work online and condition reports available upon request, it provides the opportunity to view and purchase from the comfort of your own home. For those wishing to view the paintings in person, we are delighted to offer private appointments in our spacious galleries at the Studio in Marlow.

The inaugural Studio Selections will be available from 1st – 30th October 2020 and presents the first opportunity to view, amongst others, work by Benedict Rubbra, a contemporary artist of great repute who has recently joined us at Messum’s. His unusual working technique centres on developing three-dimensional structures based on ideas principally drawn from the landscape and architecture of the Italian Renaissance.
Messum’s October Selections offers an early opportunity to explore and acquire Benedict’s remarkable oil paintings ahead of his first London exhibition.
Other, more familiar artists, include the joyful work of Nancy Delouis whose interior scenes are infused with light and saturated colours, following in the same aesthetic tradition that shaped the paintings of Bonnard. Magi Puig’s distinctive paintings, with their bright planes of primary colour combined with irresistible attention to detail, are instantly recognisable and we have included two which celebrate the blue skies of Portugal.

From the Artist Estates we have selected a group of very special works by Norman Neasom RWS RBSA (1915-2010), dating from 1940s recording his work volunteering with the St. John’s Ambulance and the local Civil Defence in Birmingham during the war, one watercolour capturing the moment German bombers attacked his local Birchensale from the air.
By contrast, is a peaceful watercolour of Christchurch Priory by Wilfrid de Glehn RA NEAC (1870-1951), which was situated not far from Wilfrid and Jane’s Wiltshire home in Stratford Tony. Directly from the Estate, this work on paper is in pristine condition and the watercolour still incredibly fresh and vibrant.

From our collections of 19th Century paintings we are including a delightful genre scene entitled 'The Midnight Feast' and dated 1866 by Frederick Daniel Hardy 1827-1911, a skilful cottage interior artist with overtones of the 17th Century Dutch Old Masters.

Messum’s has long been associated with maritime art and we are pleased to offer during October a shimmering early morning seascape by Sir Frank Brangwyn, depicting a tall ship leaving a Cornish harbour by tug and showing the strong influence of Stanhope Forbes and the Newlyn School. The artist had been immediately captured by the Cornish shoreline when he first moved there in 1887 Cornish waterfront life, writing: 'The whole harbour was filled with boats and men getting ready for the fishing; it was a sight that knocked me silly'.
