We are delighted to announce that the family art business, Messum’s, established in 1963,
will be continuing to expand with the opening of a new London venue in the heart of St. James’s in April 2020.
Messum’s has long held a powerful reputation as one of the country’s leading art galleries, not only a pioneer in the field of British Impressionism and the Newlyn and St Ives Schools, but also a specialist in exhibiting contemporary British art and sculpture. The new gallery, a large space over two floors, will offer the chance to view works of art by 19th and 20th Century British artists, on whose names the reputation of the company was founded, together with a regularly changing exhibition program focusing on the Contemporary Artists and Artist Estates represented by David Messum.
“The opportunity to re-open in St James’s is not a new one for Messum’s. We have previously operated from two galleries in this prestigious part of town and it is good to re-join other well-known art dealers whose businesses are set around the central core of Christie’s Auctioneers. The area invokes a sense that this is an enclave
for the collector and the collectable. Our established gallery at 28 Cork St is now run by my son Johnathan and provides a London base for Messum’s Wiltshire a beautiful 15th Century Tithe Barn – the interior of which is the length of three cricket pitches – where art and ideas evolve, giving openings to a wide range of artistic talent.
At 12 Bury Street, we will continue to specialise and develop British Realist and
Impressionist Art in a pattern of exhibitions which will include Contemporary
masters as well as works from the Artist Estates which we have been entrusted
with.”
David Messum, March 2020
After fifty years, Messum’s remains a family business, passionate about the art they represent. While the new gallery in Bury Street will ‘fly the flag’ for David Messum’s
business, his son Johnathan continues to run the Cork Street gallery, the London
out-post for Messum’s Wiltshire, the multi-purpose gallery and art space he created
in 2016. Lord’s Wood, David and Millie Messum’s Buckinghamshire home, has an
extensive sculpture garden exhibiting some of the finest contemporary sculptors,
open by appointment, where outdoor exhibitions of sculpture are complemented
by a gallery space. It is here at the Lord’s Wood Studio that the London exhibitions
are curated, the Estates managed and researched and the publishing arm of the
business, Studio Publications, is located.
OPENING EXHIBITION:
Lucien Hector Monod (1867 – 1957)
1st – 24th April 2020
Like his friends Wilfrid de Glehn and John Singer Sargent, Monod carried Impressionism in to the twentieth century.
His sensitively observed 'en plein air' oils and watercolours of boats in the harbour at Cannes and St Tropez, the lush landscape that surrounded his home in Provence, or the roses picked fresh from his garden, reveal the strength of this forgotten master.
A 64 page, fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the opening exhibition 'Lucien Hector Monod' - to purchase the catalogue, visit Messum's Online Shop https://www.messums.com/online-shop/home
